Albemarle-Pamlico Drainage Basin

Image of Neuse River Basin

Illustrated at this web page are the distribution and pattern of land-cover changes that occurred for calendar years 2002 (orange), 2003 (red), 2004 (pink), and 2005 (purple) across the 52,000 km2 Albemarle-Pamlico Drainage Basin. The default background imagery consists of Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper plus (ETM+) 15 meter panchromatic imagery and optional ETM+ false color composite image (March 2000). Change areas were delineated using NASA’s Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) 16-day composite 250 meter data product. Due to the sub-pixel sensitivity of the change detection technique applied, the illustration represents approximately a 2.5x overestimate of actual change area extent. An accuracy assessment conducted in Wake and Durham counties for the 2002 change year which resulted in an overall change detection accuracy of 88%, with 22% and 28% commission and omission errors, respectively. The overall annual change rates (corrected) were estimated at 0.6% (2002), 0.4% (2003), 0.9% (2004) and 0.7% (2005). This research was conducted and funded by EPA’s National Exposure Research Laboratory (NERL), Environmental Sciences Division (ESD), Landscape Characterization Branch (LCB) located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.

This change data is being made available to potential users to evaluate both data utility and quality. Specifically, EPA is requesting that users provide input concerning the functionality of the web page, the usefulness of the change year data coverages, and any insights concerning data quality. Feedback from potential data users will determine the future provision of data products to the user community. Please note that this is a draft product that is subject to further modification.
